Manuscript assessments (fiction, general non-fiction)

As a manuscript assessor, I love the big-picture thinking and collaborative experience that comes with this kind of project. I read and assess your manuscript, then provide a written report summarising my feedback. This is organised into subheadings that might include structure, plot, voice, characters, etc. We then have a brief follow-up phone call to answer any questions you might have about the report or the writing. A manuscript assessment is ideal if you’ve been working on your manuscript for some time and you’ve done everything you can for now. Copyediting

As a copyeditor, I enjoy spending deep time with a manuscript and identifying areas to tighten, clarify and enrich the writing on a sentence level. I look for ways to make the voice, grammar and punctuation as clean and consistent as possible, and offer targeted suggestions for reworking as needed. Copyediting is the final stage of manuscript editing before a book is typeset into designed pages. If you are a self-publishing author, I recommend that you have your work structurally edited before it’s sent to me for copyediting.

Workshop facilitating

In addition to editing and proofreading, I have many years’ experience teaching and facilitating both writing and editing. I’ve taught at the University of Melbourne, RMIT and UNSW, and I’ve facilitated workshops for Express Media: Toolkits, Queensland Poetry Festival, Writing NSW and Kings Artist Run. I can run workshops on self-editing practices and poetry editing as well as workshops on generating poetry.

Genre, word count, 1-page synopsis and a paragraph summarising your aims for the book (e.g. are you planning to submit to an agent or publisher? Are you planning to self-publish or submit ot prizes?)

Fiction: I enjoy working on crime/mystery/thriller, literary fiction, contemporary commercial fiction and queer fiction.

Non-fiction: I enjoy working on narrative non-fiction including memoir, and books on history, science and ecology.
